‘Remember You’re a Womble!’

I’m just having a break from my ‘thank you’ posts today to announce a Womblingly good event on the island of Alderney. You see, Elizabeth Beresford made her home on Alderney up until her death last year. In fact, many children visiting the island would have said hello to her without realising it because she was the Station Master (and ticket officer) for the little train which runs the length of the island towards the lighthouse.

To celebrate her life and her creation of the Wombles, Alderney are holding the first ever Womble Exhibition throughout the summer. She loved Alderney and even named one of her characters after the island. To find out more you can read The Alderney News:

A Reflective Moment

This afternoon I have been catching up on emails and Facebook. I have yet to click on Twitter and was in two minds as to whether to write a blog post today. You see, for nearly a month now I’ve had a bit of a break due to pressures of my other work. I was wondering how I was going to pick up the threads and launch back into Social Media with my original enthusiasm, and whether to wait until Monday.

Then I read this blog post I subscribe to called:

The Book Designer: Listening

It prompted me to think about my audience, the purpose of my blog posts and the style. Feeling like a nervous swimmer just dipping her toes for the first time into the cool sea, with hesitation I clicked open my blog, and to my surprise people have still been reading my blog posts, even in my absence. How gratifying! This slight boost to my confidence, was all I needed to click on ‘New Post.’

Hello again! I’m back!

And what am I going to be writing about in the next month?

  • I will continue with my theme of interesting stories of early flight especially related to the Solent area, both before and during WW1
  • I will tell you about colourful characters in this world of flight
  • I will continue with the occasional topical post of the day
  • and finally I will update you with some exciting news about my next novel ~ coming out very soon!

My news of today though, is that on Monday I spoke about Alderney, my family history and my writing to a lovely group of ladies in Ampthill. I thank them for their warm welcome and here is a picture of them before our most enjoyable lunch.

Ladies who Lunch in Ampthill

Let me know if there is anything you would like to know about my writing, research, family history, in fact anything related, within reason! I will do my best to reply if I can, but I certainly look forward to your feedback here on my blog, your comments on facebook and on Twitter.

I’m listening again:-)

When I’m Stressed I dream of Alderney!

Yesterday day I was teaching my students to write descriptively as part of a series of lessons on different text types. Half way through the lesson I asked them to close their eyes and their response was:

‘Only if you do miss!’ and so I did.

I described how I think of the island of Alderney in times of stress, walking along Braye Beach feeling the damp sand under my feet leaving an imprint trailing behind me, and the breeze in my hair; listening to the seagulls crying overhead and the waves lapping on the shore. I described discovering little sheltered coves, sun traps on beautifully sunny days, and listening out for Joey, the Islander aeroplane as it heralds the arrival of more visitors.

After a moment or two of silence the students opened their eyes and began to write about their own special places. It’s rare, with sixteen to nineteen year olds, to have the room so quiet that I felt the thought waves flicker as their pens flew across their paper. There was even an urgency in the hush as they proof read their work.

I had only asked for one paragraph but when I read them all back in the staffroom after the lesson I was astonished. Describing places from Dubai to Kashmir, from Southend to Blackpool, from the seaside to the busy London attractions, I read several pieces of magic. I was so proud of my students that I even read a couple of them out to my colleagues.

‘I can’t imagine ‘X’ writing that!’

‘Was that really ‘Y’s writing? Amazing!’

It was one of those red letter days at work. A shame it was a week early for our visitors though. I might ask their permission to share some with you.

A coincidence to complete this picture language was late today, when I received a reply from Visit Alderney about sending some brochures for my talks, because they attached this slide show to the email.

Enjoy the magic of Alderney!!!!!
