Background to writing

16 Years of Blog Posts ~ What Next?

I began this blog on 9th December 2009, the year my first book RIDUNA was published by Pegasus Elliot McKenzie, 16 years ago.

There are many good reasons for authors to write blog post regularly. Here are mine:

  • To publish writing news, events, appearances
  • To continue to hone my writing skills for an audience
  • To give background information about my books
  • To give back to other authors by writing reviews and sharing the love of books
  • To give readers a snippet of a picture of my life
  • To have a continued presence on the internet

What have I enjoyed over the years?

  • Interacting with readers
  • sharing my writing life
  • Receiving unexpected twitter messages or emails in response to posts
  • the discipline of writing, albeit in small chunks

What I have not enjoyed?

  • The self imposed pressure of writing posts when my mind is blank
  • The worry from time to time that I don’t get many comments or likes, even though I’m content that my posts are reaching readers by checking the stats
  • When the posts no longer came out on Twitter automatically.

Although I can’t say categorically that the effort has sold a huge number of books, it is a vital part of my author profile; my platform highlighting myself as an author.

What next?

I am having a break for a month to refresh, revitalise and relax and so hopefully, God willing, I will be back in January 2026.

Enjoy the festive season and for Christians among you, Have a joyous Christmas!

Music that has shaped my life ~ creativity working hand in hand (4)

Continuing with songs which influence my writing, but also those which tell the story of my life, oh, there are songs too numerous to mention really, including Stairway to Heaven ~ Led Zeppelin, Bridge over Troubled Water ~ Simon and Garfunkel, both iconic tracks that everyone knows, but Thank you ~ by Dido (my namesake and nick name when I was young) resonates with a moment intime. However, all these tracks have a special place in my heart and memory, and are reflected in the romantic side of my writing and a belief in love.

If I were to chose a whole album then, unlike my husband who would choose tracks with Peter Green in it such as Black Magic Woman and Albatross, I would play Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. For me, it reflects the good times and the not so good. My favourite tracks by far are Songbird and Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.

Don’t you think that music reflects moments in your life too?

And finally, later in my life, I got hooked on Bob Marley and the Wailers, with Three Little Birds, No Woman No Cry, and Is this Love.

Each song oscillates with the ebbs and flow of my life, and the powerful and poignant words thread unknowingly through my mind as I write; creativity working hand in hand.

My Place to Write ~ A Place to Call Home

My place to write has much improved since my husband has finally put up some pictures for me. Since it was the first room we decorated in the house back in 2015, he has been reluctant to make holes in the pristine walls!

I am now surrounded by family photographs above my desk and items on my desk make me happy:

A paperweight from a dear friend

An Abolone shell and a tiny map from the island of Alderney; the birthplace of my Great Grandmother and the inspiration for my first steps into writing novels.

An oil painting which my parents had on their lounge wall.

Old prints of a Guernsey girl and Cornet Street Guernsey; the birth place of my Great Grandfather.

Everything, in fact, which is connected to happy memories, places and people that I love.

What has this improvement has done to my psyche?

I feel that I have truly arrived at home.
