Diana’s September Book Review ~ Monty Don’s My Garden World

Monty Don’s book is a treasured gift from a special friend down in Bedfordshire. She knew my love for nature, gardening and the countryside, from our many walks and talks with our husbands and their dog over the years. It sits on my bedside table and I savour every moment, as I read about Monty’s world at home, in his garden and on his farm, month by month. In fact I read it a month at a time, enjoying his reflections on changes that have taken place over the years, in terms of wildlife and birds, occasionally unusual sightings and living alongside what we would call ‘garden pests’.

It is a very different world to ours on the east coast of Scotland, on the Firth of Forth estuary, but nevertheless it encourages me to be more observant and to appreciate each moment in time. I have always had a wary approach to watering to excess and using chemicals, slug pellets for example, and Monty has encouraged, me by his words, to be even more vigilant and philosophical when the natural world wins a battle over some plant or other or corner of my cliff garden. I am only a custodian of my plot for the time being after all.

Monty Don’s observations are thoughtful, beautifully written and even charming at times. You feel his joy when birds and butterflies are spotted for the first time in the year, even though this is hopefully a yearly event, and his sadness over the decline of various species.

I love the cover. Roger, my husband, always used to call Gardener’s World The Nigel Show, after Monty’s photographic dog, who was always getting in the shots. And didn’t he pose for the camera? He was a natural!

My world is richer through his words. Thank you!

Diana’s August Review ~ The Forgotten Shore by Sarah Maine

This is the third of Sarah Maine’s novels I’ve read, and I chose it from the shelves of Kinghorn Library. The other two I bought in Kirkcaldy Waterstones a few years back. I have read both twice, in fact, because I enjoyed them so much. (Not a frequent occurrence for me)

It is a two time zone novel. set in the 1940’s and the 1980’s.

Archie Maxwell, a mentally and physically damaged war hero, flees a family scandal, leaving his family home in Scotland, ending in a backwater in Newfoundland.

Eva Bayne, born in Newfoundland, was whisked away to Scotland to avoid possible scandal, aged 11 years. They may never have met again if it hadn’t been for a photograph.

As Archie put it, towards the end of the novel, ‘The fate’s knew what they were about.’

The twists and turns, tensions and tragedies in this novel, constantly keeps the readers on their toes, as each puzzle of backstory is revealed.

I love Sarah Maine’s writing style and her complex plots steeped in history. Highly Recommended and I will certainly read it again one day.

Diana’s May Review ~ The Stolen Hours by Karen Swan

This is the second of Karen Swan’s novels set on St Kilda at the time of the evacuation, each from the point of view of one of the island girls. This time it is Mhairi Mac Kinnon who is in need of a husband and she is whisked of to the nearby island of Harris to look.

As you can imagine there are twists and turns as the islanders prepare for evacuation and life doesn’t quite turn out as expected for Mhairi. Add potential murder to the plot and it is quite a read, all the more special by its location on the remote island in the outer Hebrides.

I’ve really enjoyed immersing myself in both of these books, where the island has a character of its own.
